The Schumann House is the former home of Robert and Clara Schumann in Leipzig , who spent their first four years of marriage here. It is located at Inselstraße 18 in the graphic quarter , east of the city center. It houses a museum, a small concert hall and the Clara Schumann Elementary School . The house is a listed building .

The Schumann House was in 1838 by Friedrich August Scheidel in the style of classicism built and was still Inselstraße 5. The three-story, strictly symmetrical building has five window axes in both wings and in the middle projections , by colossal structured and with a balcony is provided on the first floor . The Schumanns lived here from 1840 to 1844. During the Second World War , the house was largely undamaged, but the building fell into disrepair during the GDR era, although it was listed as a historical monument in the 1970s . In 1999 the building was bought by the Rahn Dittrich Group and renovated in accordance with the preservation order.

Use today

The Schumann Museum, which is supported by the Robert and Clara Schumann Association in Leipzig, is located in the former Schumann apartment. The association was founded in 1995 and has set itself the task of preserving the legacy of the family of musicians in Leipzig.

The concert hall, in which people like Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Franz Liszt , Richard Wagner , Hector Berlioz and Hans Christian Andersen used to come and go, is available for concerts, readings and discussions. The house is a stop on the promenade of the Unesco initiative Leipziger Notenspur .

The Clara Schumann elementary school is located in the other rooms ; it has an artistic and musical profile, with special attention being paid to the famous residents of the house.

On the 200th birthday of Clara Schumann, the Leipzig Schumann House opened a renewed and expanded permanent exhibition in 2019.
