The Borgholm Church is in the center of Borgholm on the Swedish Baltic island of Öland nearby church.

History and architecture

The current church building was built in its eastern parts in 1842 as a school building. Services were also held in the building. From 1872 a western wing was added to the school building. While the new building was supposed to contain the future school, the former school building was converted into a church with a tower. The new school building was completed in autumn 1873. The conversion of the old wing to the church was delayed for financial reasons. At Pentecost 1879, however, the inauguration by Bishop Pehr Sjöbring took place . The building has style elements that are supposed to be linked to the Romanesque .

The vestibule of the church originally only had an open lattice door to the market square. A closed door was only installed here in the course of a renovation in 1960.

Interior design

The interior of the church was fundamentally redesigned in 1960/61 according to plans by the architect Karl Hampus Bergmann . In particular, the building received a new ceiling. In the choir and above the organ , the ceiling is higher than in the central part of the nave . This design was intended to tie in with the old tradition of the saddle churches on Öland. In addition, the original wooden floor was replaced with limestone .

From the time before 1960 only the font remained in the church , which was made in Sandvik based on drawings by the imperial antiquarian .

The colored glass windows were created by Hugo Garmland , the altar and pulpit are the work of the architect Hampus. The crucifix on the altar was made by Sven-Bertil Svensson from Mörbylånga .

Two chandeliers in the nave before the renovation were moved to the vestibule and the baptistery . The baptistery was also called the Chapel of the Good Shepherd , after the motif of a round window. The window was created by Erik Jerken in 1929 and was previously on the east wall, surrounded by smaller windows. Erik Höglund created the lower window. The font in the baptistery is also based on a design by the architect Karl Hampus Bergmann.
