The tail spot algae eater or net brush algae eater ( Crossocheilus reticulatus ), older name or holotype Holotylognathus reticulatus , less common names are puzzle barbel, net algae eater or golden-brown algae eater, in English Silver Flying Fox, Silver Algae Eater, Reticulated Siamater Eaterese , is a freshwater ornamental fish from the carp family (Cypriniformes). It is often used in aquaristics to contain brush algae .

description

This species can reach a size of 15 to 17 centimeters. They have an elongated spindle-shaped body, a lower mouth with two barbels (rostral barbels at the tip of the snout), a gray-brown basic color, large scales with a net-like pattern and a conspicuous square black tail spot. Their fins are slightly yellow to transparent in color. External gender differences are not always clearly visible. Females become a little bigger and heavier on average.

Occurrence

The reticulated brush algae eater comes from Southeast Asia . It is particularly common in central and eastern Thailand . Furthermore, this species is found in clear, oxygen-rich and cooler rivers (including tributaries of the Mekong and Chao Phraya ) in Cambodia , Laos , Vietnam and southern China . The species is currently classified as “Least Concern” on the IUCN list.

nutrition

Crossocheilus reticulatus are omnivores or herbivores that can also feed on brush algae, among other things. In an experiment, five fish completely cleaned an aquarium of brush algae within two weeks. They graze on plant coverings in groups or individually. In captivity, net brush algae eaters are mainly fed green fodder. Also, cucumbers or lettuce are used. If not fed, the animals often eat aquarium plants.

Water requirements

Tail spot algae eaters have no special water requirements. It can live in a temperature range between 16 and 25 ° C, a total hardness (GH) from soft to medium hard (up to 15 ° dH), KH at around 5 ° dH and can cope with pH values of 6 and 7 in the slightly acidic range .

Aquarium keeping

Reticulated brush algae eaters are large and lively fish that should be kept in smaller groups or in schools of at least seven animals. Aquariums are only suitable for this with a space requirement of 450 liters and an edge length of 150 centimeters. They are suitable for community aquariums with sufficient hiding places (roots, stones and water plants) as well as a large swimming area for active fish with light and medium-strong currents. In the strong fish, under certain conditions, aggression and slight fights for ranking can be observed. Since reticulated brush algae eaters come from cooler mountain waters, they can easily be kept in unheated pools. Very high temperatures are not well tolerated. Many animals that are offered in the aquarium trade are either caught in the wild or have been treated with hormones.
