Schwarzenbergplatz 3 in Vienna

Schwarzenbergplatz 3 is the address of the management of the state railways on Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna , which was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in 1983 as a reconstruction.

history

The former head office of the State Railways , built in 1892 according to plans by Dionys Milch , was originally the only office building on Schwarzenbergplatz, which is dominated by the Palais.

Towards the end of the Second World War, the building was hit by a bomb in 1945 and burned down together with the neighboring Palais Wiener von Welten . While the building was rebuilt soon after the end of the war, the fire ruins were torn down by the Austrian Federal Railways in 1950 and, as a result, discussions about the new building continued for decades. These intensified after the inner city was declared an architectural protection zone in 1973 . The then City Councilor for Culture and later Mayor Helmut Zilk advocated an at least partial reconstruction, especially of the facade facing Schwarzenbergplatz. The company Mobil Oil was ready to accept the corresponding additional expenditure and had architect Georg Lippert build a corresponding historicizing building, albeit with a steeper roof, to increase the available floor space.

The building, which was moved into in October 1983, met with sharp criticism in the media, especially from modern architects and cultural critics. As a result, and based on this example, there was a campaign against Section 85 (5) of the Vienna Building Code , the so-called protection zone paragraph , which originally provided for new buildings to be built in protection zones in the same style. The paragraph was amended in 1987 in connection with the Haas House by Hans Hollein in the sense of the critics.

Until the mid-2000s, the headquarters of Telekom Austria was housed in Haus Schwarzenbergplatz 3 ; today the premises are used by the Raiffeisen subsidiary Raiffeisen Capital Management .
