The black triggerfish ( Melichthys niger ) is a species of the triggerfish family (Balistidae). When fully grown, it can reach a length of up to forty centimeters. The body color is black, at the base of the dorsal and anal fin there is a light blue thin stripe. The forehead is colored a little lighter and shows a blue line pattern.

The black triggerfish lives circumtropically in all tropical seas from shallow water to a depth of 35 meters. It usually lives near reefs and eats algae, foraminifera , mollusks , crustaceans , worms, echinoderms , fish and their spawn.
