The Black Lake is located directly on the federal highway 106 approximately in the middle of the route between Schwerin and Wismar in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, northwest of the Drispether Moor.

The polytrophic watercourse has an almost triangular shape and is mainly located in the Zickhusen municipality and to a small extent in the area of Bad Kleinen . On the northern and western banks there are deciduous forests with partly boggy soils, from which ditches feed the lake. The Lübeck – Bad Kleinen railway line runs along the south bank .

According to the Wiebeking map of 1786, the Drispether Moor area was completely free of forests. The Black Lake is shown on the map as Moorkolk .

Due to the population of eels, perches, lead, pike, carp, roach, tench and pikeperch, the water is particularly popular with anglers.
