The black-winged yellow bat ( Rhogeessa tumida ) is a Central American bat species from the smooth-nosed family (Vespertilionidae).
description
The black-winged yellow bat is between 63 and 79 millimeters long. The back fur consists of double-banded hair. These are black with a pink to cinnamon hue. The hair bases are grayish to yellowish in color. The peritoneum is brown to ocher in color. The sparse fur on the back of the relatively thick flight membrane extends to the feet. The front of the flight membrane is hairless. The ears are relatively small and rounded at the tips. The males have conspicuous glands on the back of their ears that give off a strong scent. The calcar can be clearly seen. The number of chromosomes in Rhogeessa tumida is 2n = 34.
distribution and habitat
The Central American distribution area of the black-winged yellow bat stretches in Mexico from the Atlantic coast of Tamaulipas to the Pacific coast of Chiapas . To the south the distribution area extends to the northwest of Costa Rica and the north of Nicaragua . The species can be found at altitudes of up to 1,500 meters. The animals inhabit almost every type of vegetation in tropical Central America.
Way of life
The sperm production is the male in autumn and early winter the highest. The females usually seem to have two young. The large spit leaf nose ( Vampyrum spectrum ) from northern Guatemala is known as a predator .
Diseases and pests
As ectoparasites were previously bat fly Basilia anomala and the mite Acanthophthirius longus found. There are reports from Mexico that Rhogeessa tumida transmits the rabies virus , the causative agent of rabies , to humans.
