The black-tailed marmoset ( Mico melanurus , Syn .: Callithrix melanura ) is a primate species from the marmoset family .

features

Black-tailed marmosets are, like all marmosets, relatively small primates, they reach a head body length of around 23 centimeters and a tail length of 33 centimeters. Their fur is dark brown on the upper side, the belly is lighter. There are noticeable white stripes on the thighs. The head is also dark brown, the face is hairless, the large ears protrude from the fur. The name-giving feature is the black tail, which is longer than the body and bushy.

distribution and habitat

Black-tailed marmosets have the southernmost and largest distribution area of all marmosets , they inhabit southwestern Brazil ( Mato Grosso , Rondônia ), eastern Bolivia and the far north of Paraguay . Their habitat are forests, in addition to moist forests (e.g. in the Pantanal ) they also inhabit drier, savannah-like regions.

Way of life

These primates are diurnal tree dwellers; in the branches they move around on all fours, running or jumping. They live in groups of 5 to 14 animals that inhabit an area of 10 to 40 hectares and defend them against other groups. The groups are often family groups with only one adult pair, if there are several females in a group, only the dominant one breeds. As with all marmosets, dizygoti twins are often born, and the father and the other group members look after the young intensively, they carry them and give them to the mother only to suckle.

The diet of these animals consists of fruits, tree sap and insects. Like all marmosets , they have specialized teeth in their lower jaw that they can use to gnaw the tree bark in order to get to the tree sap.

Danger

Black-tailed marmosets have a large range and are relatively adaptable. There are no known threats, the IUCN lists the species as “not endangered” ( least concern ).
