The Schwatka Mountains are a mountain range of the Brooks Range in northwest Alaska . They extend for around 170 km between the Baird Mountains in the west and the Endicott Mountains in the east. They are bounded to the west by Amakomanak Creek and Redstone River and to the east by Noatak River , Kaluluktok Creek and Walker Lake . In the north of the mountain range are parts of the Noatak National Preserves , in the west of the Kobuk Valley National Park and in the east of the Gates-of-the-Arctic National Park .

The highest mountain in the range is Mount Igikpak with 2523  m .

The mountains were named in 1884 by Lieutenant GM Stoney of the United States Army after Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka , who had led a military reconnaissance on the Yukon River the year before .
