Swineherd, dog and herd

The swineherd and his herd is a bronze group of figures in Bremen - in the middle at the end of Sögestraße near the streets Am Wall and Herdentorsteinweg . It was set up in 1974 and is included in the list of monuments and statues of the city of Bremen .

Monument and meaning

The monument, consisting of the swineherd , his dog and his herd with five pigs and four piglets, was made of bronze in 1974 based on a design by the Bremen sculptor Peter Lehmann (1921–1995) . The very popular group of sculptures was financed by the merchants of Sögestraße. It stands for the origin of the name Sögestraße : In the Middle Ages, today's pedestrian zone Sögestraße was known as Soghestrate ( Low German for sows) and was probably the street on which there were probably many pigsties. At that time, the shepherds drove the pigs from here through the herd gate in the Bremen city wall to the Bürgerweide , a common area (common property) in front of the city.

Today, children and young people like to ride the bronze pigs. It also became a habit to meet “with the pigs”.

The sculptor Lehmann also created the stone sea lions group from 1964 in the Neue Vahr in Bremen .
