The Swiss Professional Association for Applied Psychology (SBAP) represents the professional interests of its members and the interests of applied psychology in the legal form of an association . The association is a member of the Swiss umbrella association of technical college graduates.

history

The association was founded in 1952 on the initiative of Hans Biäsch , which he presided over until 1962. The SBAP initially acted as a specialist representative of the Swiss Foundation for Applied Psychology (SSAP), which was founded in 1927 by Carrard, Claparède and Jules Suter . Its purpose was to bring together the aptitude and work psychologists active in applied psychology to promote this profession through the exchange of experiences, maintaining collegial relationships and safeguarding their professional and economic interests. As honorary president, Hans Biäsch remained associated with SBAP for a lifetime. In the 1960s, the organization was primarily an association for graduates of the Seminar for Applied Psychology in Zurich, who were denied access to the Swiss Society for Psychology (SGP) because they did not have a university degree. In 1970 Peter Müri took over the presidency. The quality of the services provided by its members was a major concern. The developments of new methods and concepts in psychology were brought closer to the members by means of further training events.

As the oldest Swiss psychology and psychotherapy association, the SBAP grew from 350 to around 1,000 members under President Heidi Aeschlimann (2000–2014). The homepage and the association and specialist body came into being . A professional office was set up and in 2008 the first political secretary, Heloisa Martino, was hired. Heinz Marty presided over the association for a few months, followed by Christoph Adrian Schneider in 2014. Today, the SBAP is primarily involved in questions of corporate and professional politics. It offers its members various services and benefits as well as discounts on various products.

SBAP Ethics Forum

With the SBAP Ethics Forum , which took place twice a year from 2011, the association wanted to make ethics a topic in the association. The public and joint reflection on professional practice, the continuous discussion of questions about values ​​and professional attitudes, the committed weighing of arguments and findings promoted a common culture of discussion within the association and thus contributed to quality assurance. The members were invited to actively participate in this normative discourse within the association and to take part in the forums with their own questions or as interlocutors. In 2013 the philosopher and ethicist Peter A. Schmid headed the ethics forums.

Congresses

The association was co-organizer of the 4th Congress of the Swiss Psy Associations, which was held on June 18, 2011 in Bern on the subject of Psychotherapist 2025 .

Scientific publications

From 2003 to 2006 the association carried out a scientific study to evaluate the effectiveness of outpatient psychotherapies in individual settings. 31 psychotherapists and 150 patients with an ICD-10 relevant diagnosis were examined . The comprehensive analysis showed a general effectiveness with medium to high effect sizes for a broad spectrum of mental illnesses.

The association commissioned Jürgen Kriz with an expert opinion on the concept of scientificity in psychotherapy. This report was dotted as a reprint. issued by SBAP in May 2003.

Prize in Applied Psychology

Every two years from 2002 to 2014, the association awarded the SBAP Prize in Applied Psychology, endowed with CHF 10,000, for outstanding achievements in the field of applied psychology at home and abroad. Previous winners: Remo H. Largo (2002); Marianne Regard (2004); Evelin Lindner (2006); Peter Schneider (2008); Child protection group of the Children's Hospital Zurich (2010); Harald Welzer (2012); Ursula Hauser (2014).

Association structure

Organization and bodies

The general assembly is the highest organ and elects the presidium and board. The association is organized with a branch manager (currently: Mirjam Hasbi) and a head of professional policy (currently: Valeska Beutel). Eight board members are responsible for the relevant departments. The professional office is the service center of the SBAP and is responsible for questions from association members as well as the public, such as the placement of specialists. The relevant specialist psychologists from all areas of applied psychology are found throughout Switzerland via a platform.

The association has laid down professional ethical principles in a professional code that regulates responsibility, professional competence, confidentiality and data protection, the organization of professional relationships, and joint responsibility for the professional ethics of the SBAP and its members. In the event of serious violations of the professional code of conduct, the board can expel members.

Commissions and specialist groups

The board of directors appoints the members of the commissions. In addition to the training and quality committee, which examines the applications for the relevant SBAP specialist titles, the ethics and appeals committee is also active.

Membership Conditions

Members can become:

  • Students studying psychology at a university
  • People who have completed a university degree in psychology (Bachelor)
  • People who have completed a university degree in psychology (Master)
  • Other natural or legal persons as SBAP friends (different membership fees, whether individual or institution), without voting rights

All members undertake to comply with the professional code. Compliance with training guidelines is an integral part of membership. The association reviews the annual training protocols.

According to the association's statutes, the association aims today to represent the professional interests of its members. Extract from the statutes:

"He performs the following tasks in particular:

  • He advocates high quality in psychological education and training and in the exercise of psychological professions;
  • It can issue a professional code of conduct that is binding for the members, which sets out the ethical principles for the exercise of the profession and the provision of psychological services and supplements the existing legal provisions for this;
  • For quality assurance purposes, he can award professional association titles and quality certificates for psychological specialist areas that are linked to legal requirements;
  • He is committed to the recognition of applied psychology in politics and society; it can support scientific research in this area and award prizes;

In addition, it supports the exchange of information, experiences and networking among the members, with other psychologists, the next generation and other organizations. Professional policy

The association actively pursues professional policy. He is represented in national and cantonal committees and advocates the interests of applied psychology. For example, the SBAP was a member of the two federal commissions that prepared the Psychology Professions Act (PsyG), which was approved practically unanimously by the Swiss parliament in 2011 and came into force on January 1, 2013. The SBAP is committed to the equivalence of the dual education path.

Regarding the change from the delegation / to the arrangement model in psychological psychotherapy, the SBAP, together with its partner associations FSP and ASP and other important associations and organizations, submitted a petition with over 94,000 signatures to the entire Federal Council in March 2019. Since then he has been working in the working group that conducts collective bargaining. He also appears as a stakeholder towards the BAG.

Two specialist groups, psychological counseling and psychotherapy, support the association in strategic and content-related issues in these subject areas.

Specialist title

The association awards fourteen legally protected specialist titles, including in psychotherapy , professional and career counseling, child and adolescent psychology , in writing psychology and in emergency psychology . All specialist psychologists have a basic course in psychology at the master’s level and have specialized, i.e. they have received further training in accordance with the SBAP guidelines. All specialist psychologists undertake further training that serves to maintain professional qualifications and compliance with the SBAP professional regulations. The specialist titles are considered a quality label.

The trade and association magazine punktum appears three times a year . with current articles on topics of applied psychology. It appears in an edition of 1,400 copies and in the virtual psychology library.

SBAP Master Prize

Together with the ZHAW, the SBAP awards a prize for the best master’s thesis in three categories (clinical psychology, work and organizational psychology, developmental and personality psychology). The prize is awarded in the form of a free annual membership and a monetary gift.
