Swiss Landscape Protection Foundation

The Swiss Landscape Protection Foundation (SL) is a non-profit foundation in the field of nature and landscape protection and landscape conservation in Switzerland .

history

The foundation was established in 1970 by Pro Natura , the Swiss Heritage Protection , the Swiss Association for National Planning (since 2018 Espace Suisse), the Swiss Alpine Club and the Swiss Tourism Association . In 1999 it was renamed the Swiss Landscape Protection Foundation .

Purpose and goals

The foundation aims to preserve, maintain and upgrade the landscape. The SL pursues its foundation goals in particular with advice, reports, training, publications and project work. The foundation works closely with authorities and organizations that deal with spatial planning, nature conservation, the protection of localities and monuments, tourism and regional politics.

In particular, it pursues the following objectives:

  • Protection and maintenance of near-natural landscapes that are characterized by special natural values ​​and traditional management
  • Ecological upgrading of cleared landscapes
  • Preservation of the recreational quality of the landscapes
  • Best possible protection of the landscape when planning and creating buildings and systems
  • Avoiding careless interventions in landscapes

organization

The highest management body is the Board of Trustees , which is composed of 16 members. These include representatives of the founding organizations and of the National Council and Council of States . The Board of Trustees has been chaired by National Councilor Kurt Fluri since 2010 . His predecessors were Erika Forster-Vanini from 2004 to 2010 and Lili Nabholz , who held the presidency from 1992 to 2003.

The office, headquartered in Bern, is under the direction of Raimund Rodewald responsible for the operational implementation and carries out the project work. In addition, the SL has a patrons' association with a general meeting and board. The patrons' association has around 800 individual, collective, cantonal and community members.

The foundation calls for a reduction in high land consumption and better enforcement of environmental and planning laws. As part of political engagement, political initiatives, initiatives (e.g. the landscape initiative from 2008 or the twin initiatives biodiversity and landscape from 2019), position papers and statements are submitted. There is also the possibility to make use of the right of appeal. The foundation would like to take up landscape-relevant topics at an early stage. One component of the activities is project work on site. Whenever possible, the SL tries to get support through cooperation with local associations and organizations.

Actions

The project work is divided into thematic actions in order to preserve and maintain special cultural landscapes in a targeted manner. The individual actions include multi-year programs in the areas of conception, implementation and public relations.

  • Terrace landscapes
  • Health-promoting landscapes
  • Renaissance of the avenue landscapes
  • Historic pasture landscapes with old paths, fences and walls
  • Chestnut donuts

Since 2010, the SL-FP has been honoring the " Landscape of the Year ".
