The Schwuhplattler are a Munich club that practices traditional Bavarian Schuhplattler . The association already has a little more than 100 members and is the first gay association in the world that has dedicated itself to preserving Bavarian customs and traditions, especially Schuhplatteln.

history

The group has existed since 1997. On April 22, 2001, the association named d 'Schwuhplattler - the first gay Schuhplattler group e. V. founded. Initiator Sepp Stückl was an active traditional costume maker in Uffing am Staffelsee from childhood and became chairman of the traditional costume club there in 1983 at the age of 21, which he gave up after 10 years.

The participants of the Schwuhplattler club not only come from Munich itself, but also from the Bavarian region.

The Schwuhplattler show the Mühlradl at the CSD in Munich in 2016. The actually mixed couples of man and woman are cast as same-sex.

In traditional Bavarian Schuhplattler costume , they appear at various urban and international events, such as the Munich Christopher Street Day and the Hans Sachs Street Festival, the two largest gay and lesbian events in Munich, the Rainbow Parade in Vienna, 2003 at the “Equality Forum” in Philadelphia or in 2006 at the Gay Pride Parade in New York City . The Munich Christopher Street Day has been led by the Schwuhplattler since 1999.

In order to avoid mix-ups during the couple dance , the partners identified themselves for a while with the usually female part without a hat.

The Schwuhplattler are not subordinate to any Gau - a regional costume association. In traditional Bavarian organizations, the Schwuhplattler were viewed critically in the past, because they feared that it was about "show" instead of customs and that people wanted to make fun of their values and traditions. In addition, Schuhplatteln is “an advertising dance for a boy if he likes a dirndl”, which is incompatible with being gay and the advanced age of Schwuhplattler. The extent to which the organized folk costume distanced itself from the group out of homophobia or out of a claim to sole representation remained partly open. In recent times the Schwuhplattler have been widely accepted.

Awards

In January 2008, the club's founder, Josef Stückl, was awarded the Munich Glow Medal for the Schwuhplattler . Stückl managed to
"build a bridge between two very different scenes."
