Scipione Cardinal Gonzaga

Scipione Gonzaga (born November 11, 1542 in Mantua , † January 11, 1593 in San Martino dall'Argine ) was the son of Marchese Carlo Gonzaga of Gazzuolo and cardinal since 1587 .

Life

He came from the noble Mantuan family of the Gonzaga . Scipione was one of ten children of Carlo Gonzaga (1523–1555) and his wife Emilia Cauzzi Gonzaga (1524–1573), daughter of Federico II Gonzaga and Isabella Boschetti . Among his brothers was the future Catholic bishop Annibale Francesco Gonzaga . After the death of their father in 1555 Scipione and Annibale came into the care of their uncle, Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga , and his brother, Marchese Ferrante Gonzaga .

Scipione grew up under the care of Ercole Gonzaga. In Bologna, and from 1558 in Padua, he studied mathematics and philosophy, and in 1563 he began to study theology. After completing his theological studies, he came to Rome and was ordained a priest in 1579. In September 1585 he was appointed Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

Pope Sixtus V elevated him to cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo in the consistory of December 18, 1587 , after he had already been a promising candidate for a cardinal's hat in the consistory of the previous year and had also sought to be elevated to the cardinal status. In the second conclave of 1590, which elected Gregory XIV Pope, Scipione Gonzaga supported the candidacy of the Archbishop of Bologna Gabriele Paleotti . Suffering from severe gout , he retired to San Martino dall'Argine and died in January 1593.
