Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. variiflorus is an endangered subspecies of the Sclerocactus parviflorus plant in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The subspecies was named after the variability of the flower color. An English common name is "Betatakin Cactus".

description

Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. variiflorus grows individually spherical to elongated. It becomes 4 to 10 cm long and in diameter. The yellow, white, purple, bell-shaped flowers are 3 cm long and in diameter. In contrast to the other representatives of the Parviflori section , the occurrence of the uniform, dense population of the subspecies Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. variiflorus and restricted to altitudes from 1900 to 2200 meters. At the western edge of the distribution area there are intermediate forms to the typical Sclerocactus parviflorus and at the southern edge transitional forms to Sclerocactus whipplei . The flowering time is in June.

distribution

Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. variiflorus grows endemically in the Great Basin Desert in Arizona in sandy soil in open woodland at an altitude of 1900 to 2200 m.

The description as Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. variiflorus was created in 2005 by Fritz Hochstätter.

A synonym is Sclerocactus parviflorus f. variiflorus Hochstätter (1998).
