Scotopteryx coelinaria is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the tensioner (geometridae) and the sub-family is Larentiinae assigned.
features
butterfly
The moths reach a wingspan of 28 to 34 millimeters. The basic color is brownish. The deep dark brown central field of the forewings is divided by a light brown stripe in which there is a single, very small black point. A double point jumps out clearly. Next to the dark root field there is sometimes a red-brown band. A dark shadow can be seen at the apex . The hind wings are gray-brown, slightly darkened on the outside. The antennae of the males are combed, those of the females are thread-shaped.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are alternately provided with light brown and dark brown stripes.
Similar species
- Scotopteryx angularia , Scotopteryx moeniata and Scotopteryx ovallaria differ in the completely dark band on the forewings , the mostly single outwardly protruding tip and the lack of the red-brown band next to the root area. The similarly drawn two-point wavy welt tensioner ( Scotopteryx bipunctaria ) usually differs significantly through the gray basic color and the two small black dots in the middle field.
Geographical distribution and occurrence
Scotopteryx coelinaria occurs in Portugal , Spain , Andorra and the French Pyrenees . The species is preferably found on dry mountain slopes.
Way of life
The nocturnal moths fly in one generation from June to July and also visit artificial light sources . Gorse species ( Genista ) are given as food plants for the caterpillars , which needs to be confirmed after further investigations.
