The St. Budolfi Cathedral in Aalborg is the main church of the Aalborg Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Danish People's Church .

history

The church, which is under the patronage of Saint Botolph , was built around 1450 and after the Reformation, which began later in Aalborg than in the rest of Denmark, it was made a bishop's church in 1554.

A wooden church and two Romanesque churches previously stood in the place of today's church . The nave was first built in the Gothic style around 1450 . The tower was added in 1778-1780 and has a dome in the style of the Dutch Renaissance . The church tower is shown in the city arms. In 1817 four clock faces were attached to the tower, on the south side as a sundial. Three bells hang in the tower. Substantial renovations took place in 1860, 1886 and 1898/90. In 1899 a sacristy was added to the north aisle. In 1942/43 the choir was lengthened by 14 meters and a chapel was added to the north nave. Today the cathedral is 56 meters long and 22 meters wide.

Furnishing

Around 1500 the vaults were decorated with wall paintings. Its status as a cathedral church is reflected in the rich inventory: the early baroque altar was created by Lauritz Jensen in 1689 and shows the Golgotha , which is kept in dark tones, in a golden frame. In the predella of the altar there is a painting of the Last Supper, in the upper part a painting of Jesus' Entombment. The pulpit dates from 1692, also by Lauritz Jensen. It shows the passion of Jesus on ten panels. The white marble baptismal font is a foundation from 1728. On the north side, a patronage box was created for the king in 1766 .

There are also some epitaphs . The most important are that of Karine Hansdatter from 1583 (Renaissance) and the early classical epitaph for Jacob Himmerig from 1773/74.

organ

Marcussen organ

Today's organ stands on the west gallery and was built in 1959 with 40 registers distributed across three manuals and pedal by Marcussen & Søn from Aabenraa , the organ facade from 1749 has been preserved. Since the Rückpositiv was not created until the new organ was built, it was designed by Leopold Teschl. However, since the style did not match the rest of the church, the facade was adapted in 2007. The slider chests -instrument has 43 stops on three manuals and pedal. The actions are mechanical. The stop action is also electric.
