Scytopetalum is a plant kind from the family of lecythidaceae (Lecythidaceae) with three species that are native to tropical West Africa.

description

Scytopetalum are trees or shrubs, the leaves are entire, the inflorescences indefinite with a bare inflorescence axis. The petioles have a zone with separating tissue at the base. The calyx continues to enlarge after flowering. The twelve to sixteen staminodes are bare. The false crown is thick and leathery.

The ovary is on top and has seven to eight, rarely six carpels . In each compartment there are two ovules , the fruits are berry-like.

distribution

The genus is native to tropical West Africa and tropical Central Africa.

Systematics

The genus was described by Adolf Engler in 1897 . It includes four types:

  • Scytopetalum kamerunianum Engl .: It occurs in the Democratic Republic of Kodngo, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon and on islands in the Gulf of Guinea.
  • Scytopetalum klaineanum Pierre ex Engl .: It occurs in Cameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and on islands in the Gulf of Guinea.
  • Scytopetalum pierreanum (De Wild.) Tiegh. : It occurs in the Central African Republic, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • Scytopetalum tieghemii Hutch. & Dalziel : It occurs in Gnana, Ivory Coast, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
