Ilex abscondita is a species ofthe holly genus ( Ilex ). This rare species is endemic to the Serranía La Neblina National Park in Venezuela .

Vegetative characteristics

Ilex abscondita is a shrub or small tree that reaches heights of 3 to 5 meters.

The leaves are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The smooth petiole is 7 to 13 millimeters long. The somewhat leathery leaf blade is 5 to 9 centimeters long and 4 to 6 centimeters wide and is broadly egg-shaped with a wedge-shaped base and a broadly rounded upper end. The bare leaf blade is entire, and covered with black spots on the underside. On the midrib and on the lateral nerves there are furrows with fine downy hairs ( indument ) on the upper side of the leaf .

Generative characteristics

The lateral, laterally arranged male inflorescence contains only three flowers. The lateral female inflorescence consists of a single flower. The inflorescence axis and pedicels are finely hairy. The fruit stalks are 6.5 to 11 millimeters long. The egg-shaped young fruits are 7 to 9 millimeters long and 6 millimeters in diameter.

Occurrence and status

Ilex abscondita was discovered in 1984 on the southern slopes of Cañon Grande at an altitude of about 1900 meters in the Serranía La Neblina National Park in the Amazonas state in southern Venezuela . This species has not yet been detected outside of this region.

Ilex abscondita is classified as "endangered" by the IUCN . The distribution area covers an area of ​​less than 100 km².
