The D-6 class was a class of four container ships owned by the US shipping company Sea-Land Corporation , whose midships were originally part of four older Sea-Land ships. Sea-Land commissioned the ships between 1977. The container ships of the D-6 class were the first motor ships of the Sea-Land shipping company when they were built.

history

At the beginning of the 1960s, the shipping company Sea-Land had existing T3 tankers converted into T3 class container ships. The central aisles required for this were built in Hamburg in 1962/63 by the Schlieker shipyard and Blohm & Voss . After the propulsion systems of the standard tankers built during World War II had reached the end of their service life, they were sent to the Mitsubishi shipyard in Kobe in 1977, which built new container ships using the older central aisles. The fore and aft hulls were separated and later scrapped, the remaining midships received new fore and aft hulls from Mitsubishi for 52.2 million US dollars and were put back into service as the D-6 class.

The propulsion system consisted of a Mitsubishi-Sulzer 6RND90 diesel engine, which helped the ships classified as new to a speed of 18.5 knots. The newbuildings contained 1023 TEU in cell guides .

Due to the construction of the central aisles in the early 1960s, the remarkable fact arose at the end of the operating period that they were probably among the last container ships whose hulls were still partly riveted .
