Sebastian Kastner OSB († April 30, 1577 in Metten ) was a German Benedictine in Niederalteich Monastery and later abbot in Metten Monastery .

biography

Sebastian Kästner, who came from Regen in the Bavarian Forest , made his profession on February 4, 1551 in Niederalteich Monastery . The activity as provost in the Rinchnach monastery, which is dependent on Niederalteich, and his reputation as a pious and virtuous monk were probably the reason why he was postulated as abbot in the Metten monastery on October 17, 1569. Apparently they were hoping for an economic consolidation and religious renewal of the monastery after the less fortunate administration of the deceased Abbot Oswald II Mayr. However, Abbot Sebastian, who had only reluctantly accepted the office, did not succeed in sustainably improving conditions in Metten. During this difficult time due to the effects of the Reformation, monastic discipline in Metten declined and the number of conventuals sank to 4 to 5 clerics. When the abbot died in 1577, no successor could be chosen. The Metten conventual, Fr. Johannes Eislinger, who was entrusted with the administration, had to be dismissed due to incompetence, as was Fr. Benedikt Widmann from the Heiligenkreuz Monastery in Donauwörth, who was subsequently entrusted with the administration . Only under the administrator P. Johann Arnold appointed from Weltenburg Abbey and through the tough intervention of the papal nuncio and Regensburg diocese administrator Felizian Ninguarda and the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm V did things gradually improve.
