Sebastian Neidhart

Sebastian Neidhart (* 1496 in Ulm ; † July 19, 1554 ) was an important Augsburg merchant.

life and work

His parents were the mayor of Ulm, Matthäus Neidhart (* around 1465 in Ulm; † 1537) and Magdalena, b. Krafft (* around 1460). His father was also city governor of the Swabian Federation.

On August 5, 1513, he married Helena, the daughter of Christoph Herwart († 1529) in Augsburg . With that he acquired the citizenship of Augsburg. After concluding a loan agreement of 40,000 ducats with Charles V in 1530 , he became one of the Habsburgs' most important financiers.

He then took part in several spectacular ventures in Spanish America. In 1535, together with Jakob Welser from Nuremberg, he equipped a ship from the fleet that the conquistador Pedro de Mendoza led to the mouth of the Río de la Plata . Two years later he acquired rights to the pearl banks on the island of Cubagua off Venezuela and went into silver mining in Zultepeque, Mexico , together with the German merchant Lazarus Nürnberger , who lives in Seville .

In 1538 he was accepted into the patriciate.
