Sebastiano Ghezzi (* around 1580 in Cureglia , † 1645 in Comunanza ) was an Italian painter and architect of the Baroque.

biography

He was born in Comunanza near Ascoli Piceno . In Bologna he learned drawing from Guercino . He became known as an architect. Pope Urban VIII entrusted him with the prestigious task of overhauling the church fortresses. He was made a papal engineer and a knight of the cross. His son Giuseppe was famous as a painter; his nephew Pier Leone became famous for his caricatures.

Sebastiano frescoed the lunettes (1612–1613) in the cloister of San Domenico in Ascoli, where he left a self-portrait. The frescoes are currently very damaged. He also painted the high altar of the Church of San Francesco in Comunanza. One of the few surviving paintings attributed to Ghezzi is an Assumption of the Virgin in the church of Ss Lorenzo, Silvestro e Rufino in Massa Fermana . In the church of San Giacomo Apostolo in Ascoli Piceno, in the lunette of the main portal, there is a fresco from 1633 depicting the Madonna and Child between Saints James and Emidius .
