Sebros

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sebros ( ancient Greek Σέβρος ) is a person from Greek mythology .

He is the son of the hippocoon from Amyklai . The oldest evidence of Sebros is its mention in a catalog of the hippocoon sons by the choir lyricist Alkman . Pausanias reports about Heroa of the sons of the Hippocoon who were in Sparta behind a portico next to a group of plane trees. In the group of plane trees was a heroon of the Olympian Kyniska , who was venerated there as a cultural hero of horse breeding. Besides Sebros, the sons of the hippocoons , Alkimos , Enaraiphoros and Dorkeus, were venerated. A place near the Heroa was named after Sebros Sebrion .

A myth about the sons of Hippocon is depicted in the library of Apollodorus , but there are more than four of them and they have different names. Together with his sons Dorykleus , Skaios , Enarophoros , Bukolos , Euteiches , Lykaithos , Tebros , Hippothoos , Eurytos , Hippokorystes , Alkinos and Alkon, Hippokoon drives the rulers of Sparta , Ikarios and Tyndareos out of the city. Hippocoon and all his sons are killed by Heracles , whereupon Tyndareus takes control again.

Sebros can be identified with the Tebros from the library . The reason for the different name forms is assumed to be either an error in the transfer of the name or a sound shift in Doric .
