Zebulun hammer
Zebulun Hammer ( Hebrew זְבֻלוֹן הַמֵּר Səvūlōn Hammer , born May 31, 1936 in Haifa , League of Nations mandate for Palestine ; † January 20, 1998 in Jerusalem , Israel ) was an Israeli politician , minister and deputy prime minister of the country.
Life
Hammer was a board member of the youth organization Bnei Akiva ( Hebrew בְּנֵי עֲקִיבָא; lit. the children of Akiba ) and served in the Israeli Chejil Schirjion ( Hebrew חֵיל שִׁרְיוֹן) A corps of the IDF , that the program of the Nachal ( Hebrew נח״ל) participated. He did his military service in a Nachal unit of the IDF .
Hammer graduated from Bar-Ilan University with a BA in Judaic and Religious Studies and a certificate as a teacher. At the university he was chairman of the student council and member of the executive committee of the Israeli student union and the world union of Jewish students.
Hammer became a member of the National Religious Party ( Mafdal ) in the Knesset in 1969 . He was appointed Deputy Minister of Education on January 16, 1973 and held this office until January 20, 1974. On November 4, 1975, he was appointed Minister of Welfare and Social Services , but could only hold this office until December 22, 1976, since his party left the governing coalition in December 1976.
After the 1977 elections, he became Minister of Education on June 20, 1977 , a role he held until September 13, 1984. In 1981, during the elections to the 10th Knesset, Hammer and Yehuda Ben-Meir briefly left the National Religious Party to found the new faction Gescher - Zionist religious center ; however, after two weeks they returned to the National Religious Party.
From October 7, 1986 to June 11, 1990 he was Minister of Religion and from March 15, 1990 to July 13, 1992 he was again Minister of Education . He lost his seat in the Knesset when his party left the ruling coalition of Yitzhak Rabin . After the 1996 elections, he was Minister of Education from June 18, 1996 to January 20, 1998, and Deputy Prime Minister from June 18, 1996 to January 20, 1998 . He was then Minister of Religion from August 22, 1997 to January 20, 1998 .
Hammer died of cancer on January 20, 1998, leaving behind a wife and four children.
