Secret of Elements is a Rostock live project by Johann Pätzold, which he and Stefko Kruse founded in 2009.
Pätzold places particular emphasis on the use of conventional musical instruments in the production of electronic music . In the live performance, various musical instruments are added to the actual DJ and live set. He also produces music for theater and film and has taken over several musical compositions for the Rostock Volkstheater, as well as setting various short and art films to music.
history
Life
Johann Pätzold was born in Rostock in 1987. He began to learn to play the piano by himself at an early age. In the course of his life he learned six musical instruments, but mainly focused on the piano. Pätzold also works time and again with the dancers of the Rostock Volkstheater and composes music for the dance company.
2009-2010
Johann Pätzold was very involved in Rostock's club scene. During this time he got to know the Rostock DJ and producer Stefko Kruse. Kruse and Pätzold joined forces; while Kruse produced the electronic part of the music, Pätzold worked on him with the melodies and composed the piano music. At that time, no direct and fixed name for the project had yet been found. In 2010 Stefko Kruse experienced greater successes with his own live project Turm3 , so that Johann Pätzold continued on his own . When Stefko Kruse became better known with Turm3, he and Johann Pätzold went their separate ways.
2010–2012
Pätzold began studying physical engineering at PTL Wedel (Hamburg) in 2011
which he had to stop due to illness. He returned to Rostock for treatment. During his illness he produced large parts of his first work Minds in the psychiatric department of the Rostock University Hospital. The in-house music room was made available to him for this purpose. With the titles created in this way, Pätzold applied for the first time under the name Secret of Elements at the record label Timezone and shortly thereafter received a recording contract.
In order to continue performing live after Stefko Kruse's departure, Johann Pätzold teamed up with Martin Menzel, who was enthusiastic about the project. Pätzold took care of the complete production of the tracks and Menzel put on the live beats. The first joint appearance took place in 2011 as part of the Come Together Festival. In 2012 Martin Menzel and Johann Pätzold separated again because their careers diverged.
Since 2011, Pätzold has often been booked as a guest speaker at national and international medical congresses - such as the Charité Berlin or the international congress The subjective side of schizophrenia - giving lectures on alternative treatment options for psychiatric patients - especially with the diagnosis of Schizophrenia - stopped.
2012-2014
2012 was a musical crisis year for Pätzold. In order to find himself again, he traveled to Romania , and carried out a vision search there , an old esoteric rite of the Eskimos. In this year of attempted self-discovery , Alfred Heinrichs and Carlo Ruetz remixed a track by Secret of Elements, which unexpectedly led to a leap in success. In the same year Pätzold received an award at the 4th international photo, short film, animation and game competition in the form of a “special recognition” for a composition on the subject of violence prevention. In 2012 and 2013, Pätzold then worked intensively on his second album, which should consist as much as possible of acoustic elements, from classical piano and violin pieces to string ensembles, but always with the typical electronic character.
Shortly thereafter, Secret of Elements released another EP, the Back Wood EP, in which Pätzold was supported with remixes by Stefko Kruse, Djulien Ferrantes and Nico Pusch. This EP was the most successful release of his career until 2014.
In spring 2014, Secret of Elements released the album Schizophrenia , which makes direct reference to the NSA affair . At the same time he founded the label Gleichklang Recordings, on which the album was released.
2014-2017
In autumn 2014, Pätzold campaigned for the Rostock Volkstheater , which was about to close. To this end, he organized a larger demonstration on November 4, 2014, and campaigned at the federal level for better promotion of art and culture in Germany. He was also heard by some members of the Bundestag, such as the State Minister for Culture, Monika Grütters , and Gregor Gysi , who advocated that the federal government should help finance part of the new theater building in Rostock . Pätzold emphasized again and again that the closure of the theater in Rostock would have a signal effect on nationwide theater reforms. A theater movement arose from his actionism in Rostock, from which Pätzold later withdrew after Sewan Latchinian , the director of the Rostock Volkstheater , was dismissed, but was discontinued a little later.
Pätzold has been working on a new music album since spring 2015 and in autumn 2015 released a track on the sampler Explorer # 1 on the French label InFiné Music . In April 2016, InFiné also released a music video from the previously published title The Effect of Butterfly Destiny . In an interview and other smaller statements it became known that Pätzold had been volunteering in the Balkans and the Mediterranean since the beginning of the refugee crisis and was temporarily not actively involved in music. In 2016, Pätzold was commissioned by Alexander Cazac (A&R at InFiné Music) to work on the Verusus project by Carl Craig and Francesco Tristano . He took over the post-production of the orchestral recordings of the Les Siècles Orchestra by François-Xavier Roth from Paris. At the same time Pätzold produced the EP Monumentum as Secret of Elements , which will be published as a mini album on InFiné.
After Pätzold had written a letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel and Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière about the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, he and representatives of a private sea rescue organization were invited to the Federal Ministry of the Interior in the summer of 2017 to discuss possible solutions for the Mediterranean passage.
