action

The two sisters Molly and Lizzie move with their mother Rachel from the city to an old house in the suburbs. After some strange incidents, Rachel begins researching the house's history and finds out that it belonged to seventeen-year-old German Greta and her abusive husband in the 1950s . During this time Greta disappeared without a trace.

During a search of the house, Rachel and her brother finally discover Greta's skeleton nailed behind the wall of Lizzie's bedroom. The scratch marks on the wooden back of the wall suggest that Greta was nailed there alive. Both assume that with the discovery of her remains, Greta will be able to rest in peace. But after she was locked up for so long and was cheated of the rest of her life, she is unwilling to submit to the wishes of the two. She uses her power to swap places with Lizzie of the same age through a necklace that was hers when she was still alive. Only Lizzie's sister Molly, who no one else believes, noticed the change.

In the meantime, Rachel's friend, who is experienced in dealing with ghosts, steps in to remove Greta's ghost. She doesn't notice that Greta and Lizzie have switched places. Fortunately, Molly disrupts the ritual that is supposed to transport the supposed Greta to the afterlife, and thus prevents Lizzie from being banished in Greta's place. After explaining the disruption, Rachel doesn't have a hard time pretending to be ignorant the next day and thereby manages to lure Lizzie's body back into the house. In the big staircase she finally takes Greta by surprise and asks her if she knows why she called her daughter Lizzie. This is a question the real Lizzie could answer right now. Of course, Greta has no idea and the two begin to fight. Rachel, who pushes Lizzie / Greta to the banister of the stairwell, asks Lizzie to shake off Greta and switch back to her own body. With the last of her strength, Greta tries to defend herself and falls down the stairs. She was seriously injured in the impact, but the necklace that Greta used to control Lizzie also fell off and released Greta into the house that had been her prison since the 1950s.

After several minutes of unconsciousness, Lizzie finally wakes up with the words "You called me Elisabeth because she was so strong". This is a reference to Rachel's favorite book, Pride and Prejudice . Rachel eventually leaves the house with Molly and Lizzie, only to find that the realtor who sold them the house is already bringing in new prospects. Rachel has a moral obligation to share her experiences and the past of the home with the prospective buyer. But they think they are crazy and ignore the warning.

Rachel seems happy with the attempt and drives away with her two daughters and her brother. The very last scene shows the new owners walking into the house and Greta's ghost staring down at them from one of the upstairs windows.
