Section 37 is a post-industrial band formed in 1998 .

history

Stuart J. Harris founded Section 37 with Jim Kirkwood to set Harris' poetry to music. Harris wrote to Kirkwood. Both exchanged ideas about common ideas and wrote the satirical pamphlet Critical Mass which, referring to the Book of Common Prayer, portrayed nuclear energy as a new religion . Following the elaboration of the pamphlet, the duo arranged the debut album Critical Mass Vol. 1: The Order of Confirmation , the lyrics of which were written as prayers of the newly designed religion. The texts were presented in the style of a ceremonial chant and underlaid with Bodrum and background noises . The concept album was released in 1999 on Kirkwood's Dark Age Music label .

Critical Mass Vol. 2: A Prayer for a Sick Child joined the concept in 2001. The album was recorded by Kirkwood and Harris together with Cevin Moore in his Slug and Whippet studio . Meanwhile Moore had a lasting influence on the album, the share of Kirkwood decreased. This made the music less atonal . This development was followed by the third album The Kudos of Serial Killing , on which Kirkwood no longer participated and which was more oriented towards representatives of the North American post-industrial and dark wave . The new concept album took up the theme of serial murder and, in contrast to its predecessors, was arranged and written completely song-oriented. Each piece represented a real or fictional serial killer to whom Harris and Moore assigned their own style of music. The album was released in 2003 on the band's own label Cevered Spine and in 2011 on Aesthetic Death Records . After The Kudos of Serial Killing was published , Moore left Section 37.

By 2011 Harris devoted himself more to his writing and paused the activity of Section 37. After John Frost was introduced to him in 2011, both decided to make music together under the band name established by Harris. The first joint album Legion was released in 2013 via Aesthetic Death Records. Legion continued the serial killing concept of The Kudos of Serial Killing . The album was judged to be multi-layered and received average to positive reviews. Three years later, the fifth studio album Ausländer followed again via Aesthetic Death Records . Section 37 retained an eclectic electronica and post-industrial style. It was rated rather positively.

style

The style of the group is mostly attributed to the post-industrial. Often comparisons are made to the North American representatives of industrial dance such as Front Line Assembly and Skinny Puppy . The former electro-industrial project Wumpscut is named as a further benchmark . In addition to these groups, whose influence is confirmed by the band, other influencing factors from different musical styles are referred to with Lustmord , Fields of the Nephilim , Roger Waters , Nine Inch Nails , Tangerine Dream , Shriekback , NFD , Tom Waits , Tool and Depeche Mode .

While the first two albums show more style characteristics of Death Industrial and Dark Ambient , the later albums are characterized by an electronic eclecticism . The debut album varied sound collages made up of background noises and bodrums, in front of which ritual-like spoken chants were presented. With The Kudos of Serial Killing , Section 37 changed the music to the style associated with representatives of industrial dance.

On the Chronicles of Chaos website , Section 37 is titled as the somber and less danceable version of VNV Nation . At the same time, Front Line Assembly is used as a comparison, so Section 37 would correspond to the continuously varying crossover game of Front Line Assembly. Section 37 also mixes a cold electronically produced atmosphere with various film and documentary samples , electronica with post-industrial, experiments with the available studio technology with spoken word. Section 37 will present electronica music arranged using keyboards and synthesizers.
