Seed Co , also spelled SeedCo , is an African agricultural company headquartered in Zimbabwe . It primarily develops improved seeds for corn , soybeans, and wheat . Seed Co operates primarily in South and East Africa. The CEO is Morgan Nzwere.

history

Seed Co was founded in 1940 as the Seed Maize Association (SMA).

In 2006, SeedCo joined forces with the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco), the largest cotton trading company in the Sub-Saharan region. In 2014, Aico Africa, the parent company of SeedCo and Cottco, sold a minority stake in SeedCo to the French seed company Vilmorin , which belongs to the Limagrain group , due to financial difficulties . Vilmorin's share was increased to around 30% in 2015. In 2014 SeedCo also sold 49% of its previously 100% owned subsidiary Quton, the only cotton seed producer in Africa, to the Indian company Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco), in which Monsanto holds a 28% stake. In 2015, Aico sold a 49% stake in the other subsidiary Olivine Industries, one of the largest Zimbabwean manufacturers of vegetable oil-based consumer products, to the Singaporean agricultural group Wilmar International , which did not invest in the business as expected, but closed it down. As part of the sale of shares, Aico Africa was renamed Cottco Holdings. In 2015 Prime Seeds, one of the largest producers of vegetable seeds in Zimbabwe, was acquired by Seed Co.

Seed Co is a holding company . It owns companies in Zimbabwe, Zambia , Botswana , Malawi , Tanzania and Kenya , and has locations in other South and East African countries.

Products

To date, Seed Co has launched 32 hybrid maize varieties . The company also develops and markets certified seeds for cotton , wheat , soybeans , barley , sorghum and peanuts . The varieties are developed at our own research stations. The seed propagation is carried out by a network of producers.

Seed Co has significant market shares in Zimbabwe (65%), Zambia (43%), Tanzania (40%) and Malawi (53%). Revenue for 2009-10 was $ 77 and profit was $ 13.3 million.
