Seepark Karlshorst

The Seepark is a park in the southwest in the Berlin district of Karlshorst in the Lichtenberg district . It is bounded by Liepnitzstrasse and Trautenauer Strasse, Traberweg and Rödelstrasse. The lake from which it was named no longer exists today.

History.

Seepark around 1930

The park was created in 1913 and the existing lake on Trautenauer Strasse was included in the design. At that time the lake was only relatively small. Originally it had a center island and filled almost the entire area. The lake was created in connection with the extensive wetlands and the course of the Rohrlake , which originally stretched from the Wuhlheide to Klingenberg and there flowed into the Spree . The head of the Köpenicker Bank and chairman of the Karlshorster House and Landowners Association, Otto Müller, successfully endeavored to create the spacious park with an area of around two hectares .

The Seepark was imaginatively planted and designed. Wide meadows, tall poplars, woody plantings, rose beds, fountains, rhododendron bushes , walkways with shady, climbing plants and a varied bank design characterized the park. Stairs and embankments divided the area. The lake was a popular ice rink in winter and the ascent to Trautenauer Strasse offered tobogganing opportunities.

In the summer of 1928, the bottom of the pond, the "Karlshorster See", was sealed with concrete because the lake had gradually dried up due to the lowering of the groundwater level. During the Second World War and in the post-war period , the facilities were destroyed and disappeared, and the depression between Stechlinstrasse and Müritzstrasse was filled up. At the beginning of the 1950s, the basin with the still existing concrete enclosure was finally filled in. The park was redesigned to a green area by 1955 as part of the national structure , which is loosened up with individual trees.

The original design can only be guessed at today. The park is used for walks, games and sports activities. It is of great importance for the urban climate. In 2008 a newly designed playground and football field was inaugurated.

The Traberweg Festival has been taking place in the Seepark every September since 2000.
