Lake pavilion Herner

The Seepavillon Herner is the Neo - Rococo bathing pavilion of the Villa Herner in the municipality of Horgen in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

history

The expansion of the road connection to Zurich induced Hans Heinrich Hüni-Stettler to have his new residential and commercial building built on the same in the 1840s. The responsible architects were Leonhard Zeugheer and Wilhelm Waser. After the family moved to Enge around 1890 , the villa was only used as a summer residence. Emil Streuli-Hüni commissioned the bathing pavilion after receiving the necessary concession for the landfill. The “Amalienburg” garden pavilion near Nymphenburg Palace was probably used as a model . The order was given to Albert Müller, probably Gottfried Semper's most important student , architect and director of the Zurich School of Applied Arts and the Museum of Applied Arts. The pavilion was built on the embankments on iron supports above the water. A bridge connected it to the bank. The work was completed in 1901, with electrical lighting installed from the start. In connection with the expansion of the Zurichseebahn on the left bank to two tracks, Emil Streuli-Meisser used the opportunity in 1923 to further fill the area and connect the island to the bank. The pavilion has been a listed building since 2001 and was extensively renovated between 2002 and 2004. It is privately owned and not open to the public. Public summer concerts have been held here for some time.

Building description

The symmetrical structure is U-shaped and single-storey. The two legs flank the entrance on the land side with smooth Savonnière limestone facades , the articulated pilasters are decorated with stucco motifs. The roof structure is covered with sheet copper and, like the grilles above the windows, is partially gilded with gold leaf . The pavilion stands on a steel structure above the water.

From the entrance one immediately enters the central room under the dome, which together with the seaward parts of the side wings takes up the entire length of the building. The herringbone oak parquet, the stucco work, rich in figures, as well as marble cladding and paintings divide the bright three-part room. The former changing rooms for men and women are located in the side wings. Trap doors lead from these directly to the water under the pavilion.
