Segbwema is a small town in the east of the African state of Sierra Leone . It is located in the Njaluahun - Chiefdom of the Kailahun District in the Eastern Province , about 32 kilometers northeast of the provincial capital Kenema . According to the 2004 census , the village has almost 8,000 inhabitants.
Segbwema is traditionally mainly inhabited by the Mende , but is ethnically diverse. With the Nixon Memorial Hospital , the village serves as the main medical supply point for the Chiefdom.
On December 28, 1992, a massacre on the Mende took place in Segbwema as part of the civil war in Sierra Leone . Three years later, up to 40 deaths per day were reported due to the siege of the village, as no care was possible for the trapped population.
