Seeing instead of listening is a weekly TV show in magazine format specifically for deaf and hard of hearing viewers. The half-hour broadcast is produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk . It is broadcast in all third channels of the ARD as well as on 3sat and ARD-alpha . It is currently the only program in Germany that is regularly dedicated to the interests and information needs of hearing-impaired viewers. The first of over 1,600 issues was broadcast in 1975. The program is moderated in sign language . In addition, all episodes of the program are provided with subtitles and there are also so-called off-voices from speakers who translate the signed sentences into spoken language.

history

After various associations and parents of deaf children often called for their own program with subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing people, Enzio von Cramon, who was then editor of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation, started the series "Seeing instead of Hearing" in 1974. The deaf teacher Elke Grassl was chosen as the first presenter of the show . Gottfried Weileder, who was deaf himself and was active in the deaf association, was an adviser.

In 1990 they looked for a moderator who was deaf or hard of hearing and found him in Jürgen Stachlewitz. He moderated in German Sign Language (DGS), which made the program more popular with the target group. In 1993, however, Rona Meyendorf, who was also deaf, was given further editorial decision-making rights.

Enzio von Cramon retired in 1993 and Francine Gaudray took over the editorial department until 1999. Gerhard Schatzdorfer, who had previously been the main author of the program for many years and was the 1993 Culture Prize winner of the German Association of the Deaf (DGB), has been the chief editor. Jürgen Stachlewitz said goodbye to his retirement on April 26, 2014 with the last broadcast. Other moderators are Christine Weinmeister, Anke Klingemann, Georginia Schneid and Thomas Zander, who also take turns in between.
