history

The oldest Franciscan church north of the Alps , the Seligenthal monastery, is located in Seligenthal . It was originally founded as a hermitage in 1231 by Count Heinrich von Sayn and his wife Mechthild von Landsberg . In 1255 the monastery church was consecrated. In 1647 the church and monastery in Seligenthal burned down. On October 21, 1654, the Order of the Minorites founded a small settlement in the hermitage of the former monastery. They received the building on the condition that they set up a two-class trivial school.

In 1709, the St. Roch Chapel was consecrated to St. Roch as the patron saint of prisoners, sick people, doctors, pharmacists and grave diggers as thanks for averting the contagious disease of the red dysentery . Even today there is a pilgrimage to Seligenthal on Rochustag, August 16.

On September 12, 1803, the Minorite monastery was dissolved in the course of secularization and the property was sold.

After the abolition of the monastery in 1803, regular school lessons were only offered again in Seligenthal in 1834. The former monastery church became a parish church in 1834. From 1878 the Seligenthal pupils were taught in the neighboring village of Kaldauen .

On August 1, 1969, as part of the municipal reorganization of the area around Bonn ( Bonn Law ) Seligenthal was reclassified to the city of Siegburg. Previously, Seligenthal belonged to the Lauthausen community .
