Seligman Löb Straus

Seligman Löb Straus (born August 20, 1815 in Hochberg am Neckar , † August 25, 1880 in Karlsbad ) was the founder of the bed spring factory Straus & Cie. , the former largest factory of its kind in the world.

Life

Seligman Löb Straus was born on August 20, 1815 in Hochberg am Neckar as the son of the Jewish trader Maier Straus and his wife Brendel, née Levi.

He did his military service under Captain Baron von Walsleben. In 1842 he opened his first shop for bed springs in Ulm , from which the company Bettfedernfabrik Straus & Cie. originated. Baron von Walsleben gave him a loan of 2000 fl.

In 1875 Straus donated 56,000 fl = 137,100 marks for the new building of the Cannstatt synagogue .

Seligman Löb Straus died in August 1880 only a few days after he had turned 65 during a cure in Karlsbad.
