From 1853 the company was located in the King of England house in Ulm , and foreign goods from Hungary were purchased for the first time because the domestic production of feathers and down was no longer sufficient. This slowly turned the company into a wholesaler. In 1863 the company was relocated to the Gasthof zum Ochsen on Brückenstraße in Cannstatt . The first shopping trip to the Easter fair in Moscow took place in 1867. In the same year the first locomotive to drive the machines was installed. In 1872 the son Isac Straus became a partner, in 1875 Ludwig Straus and in 1886 Max Straus . On September 8, 1877, the Imperial Patent No. 403 issued for a bed feather cleaning apparatus. In the same year the first imported springs came from China , albeit in poor quality. The company founder died in 1880.

When expansion was no longer possible there, a four- hectare mill site in Untertürkheim was purchased in 1886 . This was in the immediate vicinity of the Mercedes-Benz plant and the Untertürkheim train station , which also enabled a rail connection . A new headquarters were built for the company within three years . Production took place in Untertürkheim and final production and dispatch in Cannstatt. In the 1890s , branches were established in Russia (1883 in Odessa, 1886 in Charkow , Moscow and St. Petersburg) and France (Paris 1897). In 1898, the authorized signatory Carl Gutbrod managed the establishment of a production site in Berlin . With that, Straus & Cie. the world's largest bed spring factory.

In 1900 a factory fire brigade was founded in Untertürkheim as there were already several fires on the factory premises. She was assigned to the volunteer fire brigade in Untertürkheim. In 1902, 320 workers and 95 technical and commercial employees were employed in the three plants , and production in Untertürkheim and Berlin was completely electric. Berlin was also the seat of the business with decorative feathers for the fashion industry, such as in Paris. In 1905 a department store was founded in Shanghai . In 1918 and 1925 branches were opened in Cologne and Hamburg .

In 1922 the company was converted into a stock corporation. Max Straus became chairman of the supervisory board and his sons Manfred and Leo and his son-in-law Fritz Berlin formed the board. In 1923, the Shanghai department store reopened.

The subsidiary, Ideal-Qupdeckefabrik GmbH, produced down, down and quilts. From January 1, 1939, Manfred Straus was forbidden as a Jew to continue running his company. The company was Aryanized and continued until the end of the war. After the end of the war, part of the building was continued to be used by the Daimler-Benz automobile group .

Use of hydropower

Since the area in Untertürkheim was a former mill, rights for the use of hydropower on the Neckar were also available when the site was purchased . At the Neckar correction in Untertürkheim, the municipal power station bought the permits for the use of hydropower from Behr & Vollmöller and Straus & Cie. for 99 years free delivery of 25 or 53 horsepower .
