history

August Pickus , a German immigrant, is considered to be the founder of Semmes. He and a few companions founded the Semmes Land Company, Inc. in November 1900. They bought a piece of land 15 miles northwest of Mobile. Semmes was named after Admiral Raphael Semmes (1809–1877), an officer in the United States Navy .

Pickus and his partners in the Semmes Land Company sold shares and streets in the town of Semmes. However, nobody bought it and the company went bankrupt.

Railways played an important role in the development of Semmes. Mobile was a major railroad town from 1900–1902 and had the largest seaport for exporting timber in the United States. Since Semmes was a main site for logging, dummy railway lines were created in the forest to bring the wood to mills and the main railway line. Three stations were built along the line - Orchard, Semmes and Wilmer.

economy

Semmes is known nationwide for its plant breeders. Various ornamental plants are grown in huge tree nurseries and shipped all over the world. Several cultivars that arose there received national recognitions and awards.
