k. k. Landwehr barracks (Hellbrunn barracks)

Landwehr barracks (postcard, ca.1910)

In 1897/98 the kk Landwehr kaserne (Hellbrunner Kaserne) was built here on Hellbrunner Strasse south of the old town . Stationed were a battalion of Landwehr Infantry - regiment , first the Landwehr Battalion 8 of 1889 established. Regiment 2 ( "Linz"). , Later No. 1 ( "Vienna"). . The parade ground was in the direction of the Salzach, followed by the shooting range in the former alluvial forest.

The main building resembles the Lehen infantry barracks (erb. 1897–99, today Christian-Doppler-Gymnasium ), and today forms the main building of the retirement home. It is a mighty, four-story long building with a basement . The middle wing and corner wing are exposed like a risk and are extended on the back of the building and the front facade is raised by a pointed gable. The decor is classic Ringstrasse style , with neo-renaissance blockwork simulations, now contrasted with dark beige in sand colors, and slightly baroque round arched windows with white bezels.

The main building is a listed building . The Radauer house, the Stöckl house and the staff house have also been preserved from the old barracks, as well as the nursing ward, which is being replaced by new buildings, until the 2000s.

Retirement home and extension from the 2000s

Main building retirement home

In 1961 the municipality of Salzburg took over the property and set up an urban retirement home. As a result, the entire existing building was adapted to use and refurbished in accordance with the monument.

In 2004 a competition for a new building ( ) was announced in order to create a contemporary extension. This building site is right next to the building belonging to the University of Salzburg, belonging to the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Wilhelm Holzbauer  u. a., and as part of the redesign of the Unipark Nonntal / Akademiestraße area, an architecturally high-quality building was also desired here. The winning project comes from the architectural office lechner-lechner-schallhammer ( Horst Lechner , Christine Lechner , Johannes Schallhammer) and is characterized by an open room concept and diverse lounge areas and other open spaces for social interaction. The facade is simple and formal, structured by roof strips on the floors, held in the common areas with a lot of glass, which should facilitate the relationship to the outside world. The floor plan is an obliquely angled square, which forms an inner courtyard and comprises 36 residential units. The house is built in passive construction and has been optimized in terms of building ecology and operation.

In the second construction phase, the old building (nursing station) that is still attached today will be replaced by an extension, with the result that the extension will result in a "Z" open on two sides and open generously to the green space Freisaal (which is guaranteed to exist through the so-called grassland protection declaration) ).
