Horst Lechner (born June 19, 1959 in Villach ; † December 29, 2014 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian architect , interior designer , set designer and civil engineer .

Life

Horst Lechner attended the college for carpentry and interior design in Villach. In his youth he was a member of the Villach rowing club , where he was Carinthian national champion and Austrian national champion in a number of rowing disciplines between 1972 and 1977 . After graduating from college, he studied interior architecture and interior design from 1977 to 1982 , in Linz at the University of Design under Friedrich Goffitzer and Laurids Ortner . For his diploma thesis he received the appreciation award for “special artistic achievements” from the Federal Minister for Science and Research Heinz Fischer in 1983 . This was followed by architecture studies at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the master class of Hans Hollein . After converting the interior design class to the architecture class at the Art University Linz, he returned there and completed his architecture diploma in 1990. From 1990 to 1992 Lechner worked together with his fellow student Maximilian Luger as a lecturer at the Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences . In 1982 Lechner attended the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg with the architects Gustav Peichl and Wilhelm Holzbauer .

After studying interior design, he worked, among other things, at the “Research Institute for Disabled-friendly Environmental Design” in Linz. In 1987 Horst Lechner and his fellow student Christine Lechner won the design competition for the redesign of the saloon cars of the Austrian Federal Railways , whereupon the two, spurred on by the positive media coverage, opened the Lechner & Lechner atelier in Salzburg . In the course of the collaboration between the “Initiative Architektur Salzburg” with the Chair of Urban Development at ETH Zurich by Franz Oswald and the architects Daniel Libeskind & Kurt W. Forster on the project “No one in its shape - urban development on the border”, the two learned the lecturer and Editor of the book that was published at the same time, Johannes Schallhammer. Since 2000 they have been working together on a project basis in a consortium.

“We, the residents of our city, have to create our own cultural environment.
We need projection surfaces that make permanent changes and the creation of identity possible.
The aim is to discuss comprehensive content, far beyond the aesthetics. "

- Quote from Christine & Horst Lechner's contribution in “Keinem seine Gestalt”, Zurich 1997

The implementation of this thesis put forward by Lechner in 1997 can be seen in later works, for example in the step-by-step development of the “Lechner living and studio house” from a car workshop to the work and living quarters of the family of architects or the controversial “Sculpture in the Landscape” (Salzburg 2013) comprehend.

In addition to buildings in Austria, Lechner & Lechner planned and implemented projects in Germany and, from 1996 to 1997, projects in South Korea . From 2006 to 2009 the Lechner - Lechner - Schallhammer team, expanded by Johannes Schallhammer, developed hotel projects and an ecological urban development concept for the city of Mirfa in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates .

Horst Lechner was involved in the student council of the Art University Linz, the professional council of architects and the Architecture Initiative and was involved in the architectural appraisal of the city of Salzburg as a member of the planning visit. Most recently, he was a member of the Architectural Advisory Board - State of Salzburg , since 2012 Lechner was a member of the board of the Salzburg regional group of the Central Association of Architects in Austria and, since 2011, a member of the Landluft association - Association for the promotion of building culture in rural areas . There he is considered the spiritual father of the LandLuft Baukulturgemeinde-Akademie.

Lechner had been married to his fellow student, the architect Christine Lechner, since 1987 and had two sons with her. He died of a heart attack on December 29, 2014 at the age of 55 . Shortly before his unexpected death, he made his last public appearance at the wärmepol | lightning talks from the Art University Linz , moderated by his son Horst Michael Lechner.

He studied architecture at the Art University Linz as well as at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and the Politecnico di Milano and has been a member of the Landluft Advisory Board since 2015 and has also been an architect in Salzburg since 2017. His master's thesis "River Salzach - Transformation to a Lifeline", developed together with Lukas Ployer , in which a long-term development strategy for the Salzach as an urban development area was drawn up, attracted a great deal of media and political echo. In doing so, they not only work on the historical center, but also on the periphery of the city. They present strategies and concepts for the transformation of the Salzach into a cross-district lifeline with the aim of regaining the river basin as a recreational area for all Salzburg residents. The associated exhibition in the Künstlerhaus Salzburg developed into a crowd puller and was extended twice due to the large number of visitors. For this and for the further commitment to the sensual potential of the river, Horst Lechner and Lukas Ployer were awarded the scholarship of the architecture prize “Land Salzburg” in 2018 .

The second son, Paul Lechner, studies architecture at the University of Innsbruck and economics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz .

In 2016, the theater director Ches Themann Horst Lechner dedicated his Villingen production of the play "The Ambassador" by Slawomir Mrozek. Lechner was employed as a set designer, but died during the preparatory work. Ches Themann then completed the set himself in Lechner's sense. Also in 2016 a chapter in the book "People from Salzburg" was dedicated to Lechner.

After the office was founded, the “Change” shopfitting system achieved initial success. It was awarded the design award “Selected” in 1987 by the Austrian Design Institute and implemented in two Salzburg shops ( Fortress Hohensalzburg and Kiesel building ).

The atrium house in Kuchl , built in 1993, was exhibited in 1996 in the course of the publication "M1: 33, innovative austrian architecture" by Ramesh Kumar Biswas in the premises of the Austrian Parliament . For its role as a pioneering project of stringent timber construction, the building was published in numerous specialist publications.

Also worth mentioning are the numerous exhibition stands and designs of the young drink company Red Bull in the 1990s . The trendy bar “Carpe Diem” in Salzburg's Getreidegasse was also designed by the Lechners.

An important project was the Lechner residential and studio building in the UNESCO World Heritage ensemble in Salzburg's old town , which was planned, built and inhabited jointly with Christine Lechner . Although not submitted for it, the building won the Salzburg State Architecture Prize in 2010 , as the expert jury made use of its option set out in the Architecture Prize statutes of awarding a prize to a project that was not submitted for assessment.

The amoprh- shaped living sculpture in the Salzburg district of Leopoldskron , now completed, generated particularly strong media interest and controversial discussions in front of the construction site . The experimental building in an exposed location, called "Sculpture in the Landscape" by Lechner - "UFO House" by critics - was accused of breaking the conventional image of houses. According to a survey carried out by the opinion research institute IMAS after the unveiling of the building, the unusual shape divided passers-by, and for the most part a great perplexity was noticeable in the answers.

In June 2013, on the occasion of the 175th company anniversary of the building material manufacturer “Leube”, the “ Leube Sculpture Path”, designed by Christine and Horst Lechner, was opened in St. Leonhard near Salzburg. The sculpture path was built as a memorial to the company founder Gustav Ernst Leube .
