The Sepangar Bay or Sapangar Bay ( mal. Teluk Sapanggar ) is a bay on the west coast of the island of Borneo . It belongs to the Malaysian state of Sabah and opens to the South China Sea . Administratively it belongs to the Kota Kinabalu District in the West Coast Division .

geography

The bay covers an area of ​​approx. 20 km². The bay extends in a wide arc from Pulau Sapanggar to Cape Tarak Tarak ( Mal. Tanjung Tarak Tarak ). In front of the bay are the islands of Pulau Sapanggar , Pulau Udar Kecil, Pulau Udar Besar and Pulau Peduk. The coastline is mostly unforested, with industrial and maritime use.

Use of the bay

The bay is primarily used as a freight port, a naval port and an industrial location. In addition, there are some craft businesses that are engaged in the maintenance and construction of ships.

Container Terminal

After commissioning of the container terminal Sepangar Container Port Terminal of the total container traffic in the port of Kota Kinabalu was relocated here.

Naval base

After the expansion, the naval base has housed two Scorpène-class submarines built in Spain , the KD Tunku Abdul Rahman and KD Tun Razak, since 2010 .
