The Scorpène class is a ship class of conventional diesel-electric powered submarines . The construction is a joint design by the French armaments company DCN and the Spanish armaments company Navantia . The submarines are intended exclusively for export and are not used by the Spanish or French navies.
Chile is the first user and operates two units. Malaysia has ordered two submarines of the class, which have since been delivered. India plans to use six Scorpène boats to be built under license .
Even Venezuela showed the meantime interested in buying, but has now latest reports for the Russian Kilo-class decided.
Constructive features
The Scorpène class was developed from the Agosta class . Developments from the current French nuclear submarines, such as the steel alloy of the hull, were also used in the construction.
The modular design provides for three designs. In addition to the basic concept, a larger model is available that is equipped with the outside air-independent MESMA drive. Submarines with this drive should be able to operate under water three to four times longer than the boats of the basic variant without using the snorkel . As a cost-effective alternative to the basic version, the third variant is a smaller and less powerful version.
So far only the basic version has been built and delivered. India plans to build three MESMA boats.

Units of class
Chilean Navy
On December 18, 1997, the Chilean government commissioned the construction of two new class submarines. The new buildings replaced the obsolete Oberon class boats . The first boat was launched on October 23, 2003 and named O'Higgins on November 1 . Bernardo O'Higgins was a general in the Chilean War of Independence and an important pioneer of the Chilean Navy . The second unit was launched in 2004, was also named after a Chilean national hero of the War of Independence, and entered service in 2006.

Malaysian Navy
On June 5, 2002, the Malaysian government commissioned the construction of two Scorpène-class submarines. The units are named after the country's first two prime ministers , Tunku Abdul Rahman (* 1903 † 1990) and Tun Abdul Razak (* 1922 † 1976). At the same time as construction, Malaysian crews are being trained so that they can be deployed immediately when it is expected to be commissioned in the course of 2009. Since the Malaysian Navy did not previously have a single submarine, the French Ouessant , an Agosta-class boat, which had already been decommissioned in 2005 , was reactivated and leased to Malaysia as a training ship . The Tunku Abdul Rahman left the French port of Toulon on June 11, 2009 and reached the Malaysian naval base in Port Klang on September 3, 2009 . The second ship, the Tun Abdul Razak , is expected to arrive in Malaysia in June 2010.

Indian Navy
On October 7, 2005, a contract for the construction of six submarines was signed in Delhi . The submarines are built under license from Mazagon Dock Ltd. built in Mumbai . The armaments project is valued at $ 3.5 billion and is intended to replace the obsolete Indian submarines of the Soviet Foxtrot class . The boats of the Scorpène class traditionally receive the names of the Foxtrot boats they replaced. A period of twelve years is planned for the construction of the submarines, with the last three units to be equipped with MESMA drives. The commissioning of the first unit was planned for 2012, but would be delayed by three years, now at least five years, according to the Indian Ministry of Defense from April 2010. All units are to be put into service by 2020.

Brazilian Navy
On December 23, 2008, the Brazilian Navy ordered four boats. The funds were approved on September 3, 2009. All submarines, with the exception of the forward pressure hull of boat 1, which is built at DCNS in Cherbourg, are built in Brazil at the Itaguai Construcoes Navais shipyard. To this end, a joint venture was founded by DCNS (41%) from France and the Brazilian Odebrecht (59%).
In addition, a strategic defense agreement between Brazil and France was agreed for this purpose: France will help with the construction of a naval base and the submarine shipyard. In addition, the French are supporting the Brazilians in building a nuclear submarine (SN 10, Almirante Álvaro Alberto), which is scheduled to go into service around 2025, albeit without the nuclear components that have to be developed locally due to the Non-Proliferation Treaty .
It has not yet been agreed whether the drive will be diesel-electric or whether the outside air-independent MESMA drive will be used.
