Franz-Josef "Sepp" Schlögl (* 1948 in Inning am Ammersee ) is a motorcycle Grand Prix mechanic who, among other things, drives the machines of world champions such as Toni Mang , Thomas Lüthi and Dieter Braun as well as vice world champions Ralf Waldmann , Helmut Bradl and Reinhold Roth groomed. With six World Championship titles and seven Vice World Championship titles, Schlögl is one of the most successful Grand Prix mechanics of all time.

Life path

As a teenager, Schlögl wanted to become a motorcycle racer with his school friend Toni Mang. Car mechanic Schlögl and toolmaker Mang were 1,970 mechanics at the German 125- cc - world champion Dieter Braun. While Mang soon became a well-known racing driver himself, Schlögl stayed with Braun and caused a sensation by converting Braun's Yamaha TZ 250 (Braun had switched from the 125 to the 250 class) to water cooling and the engine with a square bore-stroke Relationship endowed. These innovations, which increased speed and power and reduced technical defects, proved to be successful. “We didn't have a single technical breakdown. The budget for the entire motorcycle was just 8,000 marks , and Dieter became world champion with it in 1973, he later commented.

After Braun had to end his career after two serious falls, Schlögl became chief mechanic at Mangs team. He made sure that his school friend on Kawasaki was four times world champion between 1980 and 1982 and, in his best year of 1981, won both the 250 and 350 classes. In 1986 , after a disappointing year (fourth place) and interpersonal tensions, the division broke up, and Schlögl took over the machines from Reinhold Roth. Roth was runner-up in 1987 and 1989 with Schlögl. After Roth became a nursing case after a terrible fall, Schlögl looked after the young drivers Helmut Bradl and Ralf Waldmann, who also became vice world champions under him. In 2002 he stopped for a while until he took over the supervision of Thomas Lüthi from Switzerland in 2004 and led him straight away to the 125cc World Championship in 2005.

Schlögl is married and has a son and a daughter.
