The Sepso tincture is a disinfectant for wounds .

According to the label, the original Sepso tincture consisted of 10% (m / V) aluminum chloride , 1.2% (m / V) iron (II) chloride , 1.75% (m / V) ammonium rhodanide , 2.8% ( w / v) salicylic acid , 0.5% (w / v) camphor and 48.2% (w / v) ethanol . The ammonium thiocyanate and ferric ions form a red dye - complex and thus the color of the tincture. The mechanism of action of today's Sepso-J solution is based on PVP-iodine . Compared to the wound disinfectants Kodan , Dibromol or 70% ethanol (each in the composition from 1977), Sepso tincture in the composition from 1977 has a higher remanence effect , which is due to the non-volatile components (all except ethanol and water).

Today's composition corresponds to comparable antiseptics with the active ingredient povidone-iodine . According to the package insert , the current Sepso J solution consists of the active ingredient povidone iodine and the other ingredients nonoxinol 9 , sodium monohydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, citric acid , potassium iodate and purified water .

In 1927, Sepso was introduced by Lingner-Werken , Dresden , as an iodine exchange preparation for external disinfection, initially under the name Metajodin (meaning iodine replica), then from 1935 as Sepso.

The Sepso tincture was produced by the Lingner works in Dresden, from 1962 by the Hofmann & Sommer company and from 1972 by the successor company VEB Pharmazeutika Königsee . Sepso the company through which was after the re-privatization THA in 1993 under the still valid commercial name Sepso J solution a registered word mark of the company Hofmann & Sommer GmbH and Co.
