Jusztinián György Cardinal Serédi OSB , actually György Szapucsek (born April 23, 1884 in Deáki (today: Diakovce , Slovakia ), † March 29, 1945 in Esztergom , Hungary ) was Archbishop of Esztergom .

Life

Born into a family of craftsmen Slovak, stepped György Serédi 1901 as brother Jusztinián in the Benedictine - Archabbey of Pannonhalma in Hungary and studied in different houses of the Order, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology . He received the sacrament of ordination on July 14, 1908 and then lived as a monk in Rome. There he was a member of the teaching staff of the International College Sant'Anselmo in Rome and for a long time held the office of General Procurator of the Hungarian Benedictine Congregation .

Pope Pius XI appointed Serédi in December 1927 Archbishop of Esztergom and thus Primate of Hungary and took him in the same month as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Andrea e Gregorio al Monte Celio in the College of Cardinals . The episcopal ordination received Jusztinián Serédi by Pope Pius XI. January 8, 1928. He was a Senator from Hungary and attended the 1939 conclave . With his bitter resistance Serédi made a significant contribution to the fact that the reformed imperial administrator Miklós Horthy abandoned his plans and those of his court kamarilla to establish a dynasty in 1942 .

After learning of the total bombing of Budapest , he fell ill and died of a heart attack on March 29, 1945 in Esztergom . Serédi was buried in the local cathedral .
