Serapion Brothers (Berlin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Serapionsbrüder was the name of the Berlin Circle of Friends of the writer ETA Hoffmann (1776–1822) in the Romantic era .

After Hoffmann's return from Dresden to Berlin in 1814 , a group of writers met regularly in his apartment to discuss the arts. In addition to Hoffmann himself, Adelbert von Chamisso , David Ferdinand Koreff , Theodor Gottlieb von Hippel , Julius Eduard Hitzig , Karl Wilhelm Salice-Contessa and Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué belonged to this circle, called “The Seraphine Brothers” after the holy Seraphinus von Montegranaro .

Chamisso's departure in 1815 to sail around the world with the Rurik expedition initially put an end to the weekly meeting. On the name day of St. Serapion on November 14, 1818 , however, the circle met again, and they agreed on the name Serapion Brothers . With the cycle of stories and fairy tales " Die Serapionbrüder " published between 1819 and 1821 , which at the same time represented a balance sheet of his literary work, Hoffmann set a monument to his Serapion brothers.
