The Pest Serbian Orthodox Church ( Hungarian : Szent György Nagyvértanú szerb ortodox templom , Serbian : Српска православна црква Светог Георгија у Будимпешти ) is located in the V. district (Belváros) of the Hungarian capital Budapest . It is located at Szerb utca 4 and is dedicated to St. Consecrated Great Martyr George . Under canon law it belongs to the Budapest Eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church .

history

After the end of Turkish rule, around 200,000 Serbs migrated to Hungary, where they received far-reaching privileges and the assurance of free religious practice from Emperor Leopold I. Serbs also settled in Pest and built a church, which was built in 1733 by the Austrian architect Andreas Mayerhoffer in its current appearance. Until the 19th century the Serbian community in Pest had some weight; the Hungarian / Serbian writer Mihailo Vitkovics came from here. The street name of Szerb utca is still reminiscent of the former Serbian quarter.

Church building

The baroque church is divided on both long sides by buttresses , on the main facade by pilasters . The windows are framed and suspected of having segment gables. The building has a church tower that rises slightly behind the main facade and the windows of which are balcony-like stone balustrades. There is an attic balustrade above the entrance area and in front of the tower.

Inside, the carved iconostasis from 1845 should be mentioned, which separates the choir from the nave. Its icons were painted by Károly Sterio in 1856–1857. The former women's area is separated from the men's area below by a wooden balustrade.

Garden and wall around the church with gate from Szerb utca

The free-standing church building is located in a garden that is surrounded by a wall. Several grave slabs with Cyrillic characters are embedded on the inside . The wall is interrupted by a driveway in Veres Palné utca and a richly decorated gate in Szerb utca. At the corner of the two streets, the wall is supported by a ceramic image of St. Georg crowned.

The Serbian Orthodox Church in Szerb utca is a listed building .
