Serge Merlin

Serge Merlin (* 29. December 1932 in Sainte-Barbe-du-Tlélat , Algeria as Serge Merle ; † 16th February 2019 in Paris ) was a French actor .

life and career

Serge Merlin had worked as a stage actor since the early 1950s and has since performed at renowned theaters such as the Théâtre de l'Œuvre , the Odéon - Théâtre de l'Europe , the Théâtre national de Chaillot and the Théâtre de la Madeleine . In the late 1950s, he was seen in two productions on Broadway . The character actor also played in classic plays by William Shakespeare and Georg Büchner , but made a name for himself in particular through roles in works by Thomas Bernhard and Samuel Beckett .

In 1961 Merlin made his film debut as the leading actor in Samson by Andrzej Wajda , he embodied a Jew who struggled through the brutal turmoil of World War II and the Holocaust. In the following decades, however, he was only in front of the camera irregularly, as he mainly worked at the theater. Probably his best-known role was played by Merlin as Raymond Dufayel , the painter with the glass bones , in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's The Fabulous World of Amélie from 2001. Merlin had already worked with Jeunet six years earlier on his fantasy film The City of Lost Children , in which he embodied the leader of the Cyclops .

He received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture . Serge Merlin died in Paris in February 2019 at the age of 86.
