Sergei Alexander Schelkunoff

Sergei Alexander Schelkunoff ( Russian Сергей Александрович Щелкунов ; born January 15 . Jul / 27. January  1897 greg. In Samara , Russian Empire ; † 2. May 1992 in Hightstown (NJ) ) was a Russian-American inventor.

Life

Schelkunoff studied at the Lomonossow University in Moscow . In 1917 he moved to the USA via Siberia, Manchuria and Japan and lived in Seattle from 1921 . He received his Masters in Mathematics from the State College of Washington , and in 1928 he received his Ph.D. at Columbia University .

He then began to work in the research department of Western Electric (later Bell Labs ). With Sallie P. Mead he analyzed waveguides and discovered the transverse electromagnetic wave propagated by George C. Southworth . He held 15 patents.

In 1928 he married Jean G. Kennedy.
