Sergei Ivanovich Furgal ( Russian Сергей Иванович Фургал ; born February 12, 1970 in Pojarkowo ) is a Russian businessman and politician of the LDPR party , who served as governor of the Khabarovsk region from September 2018 to July 2020 .

Life

After graduating in 1992, Furgal first worked as a therapist and neurologist in a hospital. From 1999 he worked in the import business and later became CEO of the metallurgy company Mif-Khabarovsk . In September 2018 he won the gubernatorial election in the Khabarovsk region . In the second ballot, he clearly prevailed with 70% against the candidate of the Kremlin party United Russia , which supports President Vladimir Putin .

On July 9, 2020, Furgal was arrested on charges of organizing two murders of business people in 2004 and 2005. His arrest sparked mass protests in Khabarovsk directed against the Moscow central government under President Putin. He deposed Furgal by decree on July 20, 2020 and appointed the Duma deputy Mikhail Degtjarjow , who also belongs to the LDPR, as interim successor.
