Sergei Viktorovich Shelanov
Sergei Wiktorowitsch Schelanow ( Russian Сергей Викторович Желанов ; born June 14, 1957 in Alexin , Tula Oblast , then Soviet Union ) is a former athlete who competed for the Soviet Union. The 1.89 m tall and 82 kg heavy in his competition time Schelanow was 1980 Olympic Knight in the decathlon .
Career
Schelanow took third place in the Soviet championships in 1980. At the Olympic Games in Moscow , the British favorite Daley Thompson and behind him the Soviet champion Yuri Kuzenko were out of reach for Scheljanow. But behind that he fought for the bronze medal with the Austrian Georg Werthner . Schelanow showed the best individual performance in the high jump with 2.18 meters, Werthner caught up in the javelin throw. In the end, Schelanow won the bronze medal with a 51-point lead.
1981 Schelanow reached the second place at the Universiade in Bucharest behind his compatriot Alexander Schablenko and ahead of Georg Werthner. His best performance of 8376 points (8417 points after the point scoring of 1985) reached Scheljanow as fourth in the Soviet championships in 1984. Schelanow was then active for a few years, but could no longer qualify for international championships.
